Background
PFG was formed some 12 years ago as a specialist manufacturer and installer of GRP water storage tanks. From humble beginnings the company has grown to be one of the leading suppliers of GRP water storage tanks in the UK and is probably the largest UK manufacturer dedicated to these products. The companies philosophy being quality of product through sound design and quality of service through personal attention.
Highlights of PFGs history include:
- The first UK manufacturer to provide a fully self draining base design on sectional tanks using hot press moulded panels. The PFG “Drainaway” design.
- The first UK manufacturer to provide a 4.0m deep sectional tank with a self-draining base with fully structural division walls.
- The first UK manufacturer to provide factory fitted, durable, insulation on sectional tank panels.

From formation PFG have held true to our philosophy. To this end continually investing, in particular in high grade steel tooling and plant for the manufacture of hot press moulded tank panels and a large modern moulding shop for the one-piece tank range. Investment in product evolution is continual. With modern composites the manufacturer who stops developing stops growing.
A fundamental aspect of the PFG culture is service. The proven designs being supported by an in-depth in-house capability that includes:
- Supply of all common tank accessories including ladders, handrailing, valves and connectors
- Design and supply of supporting structures
- Design and supply of pipework systems
- Provision of full installation drawings via AutoCAD plus our highly detailed installation manual.
- On site installation training
- Full technical support from conceptual design to chlorination

GRP Material
GRP composite finds many applications in the modern world ranging from high performance aerospace components to simple architectural cladding. A massive range of materials and processing methods are available to suit the required application some common characteristics of GRP items are:
- No galvanic corrosion (rusting)
- High strength to weight ratio
- Little maintenance requirement
In the particular case of water storage tanks this means:
- Corrosion free
- Excellent hygiene from inert dense smooth surfaces
- No site applied coatings or bonding
- Taint free water
- Modular construction allows for simple, assured, installation
- No significant maintenance

Sectional Tanks
Sectional tanks comprise bolted panels and a metal bracing system depending upon size. They are supplied in a palletised form for installation by our own trained erectors in the UK or for self-build for overseas projects.
Sectional tanks find application whenever access to the tank location is restricted or when large capacities are required. One piece storage tanks only being suitable for capacities of about 6 cu.m before handling limitations become dominant. The largest sectional tank installed to date by PFG is 36 x 6 x 4.0m (864 cu.m).
PFG sectional tanks utilise a metric format and are available in a 0.5m increment.
The sectional tank is a carefully integrated design based upon the obvious requirement to prevent leaks for the life of the tank. This is achieved by:
- Hot press moulding in matched steel tooling to allow manufacture of consistent, precise panels with extremely thick, rigid flanges.
- Fully elastic, dry, EPDM rubber gasket system for ease of installation and no risk of leakage due to creep or age hardening of sealants.
- High rigidity galvanised steel bracing system that is simple to fit and allows only negligible movement of the panel joints under load.
- Attention to design details and an understanding of the life cycle of storage tanks.
- In the home market PFG tanks are installed by our own site crews, this provides full feedback for product development and hands-on information to our designers.
Throughout the tank only the most durable materials are used:
- High grade isophthalic polyester resins with high temperature curing
- Marine grade A4/316 stainless steel fasteners and metalwork inside the tank
- Hot dip galvanised steel fasteners and metalwork outside
- High performance EPDM gaskets
- Supremely weather resistant ASA capped ABS shells to protect the high performance polyurethane insulation (optional)- the insulation covering the full panel area and being a class leading 50mm thick.

One-Piece Tanks
One-Piece tanks a supply only product and are moulded as complete tanks with bolted lids. They are laminated using a carefully controlled open mould process within our purpose built factory. The tanks are a rectangular format and available as our standard size range or as specials.
To ensure consistency of product the resin is machine dispensed using bespoke plant with no manual mixing of chemicals. The glass reinforcement is tailored to set schedules as are the structural ribs and insulation slab as appropriate.
The tanks can be supplied in varying levels of specifications ranging from a simple non-insulated open top tank only suitable for process applications to a fully insulated tank with sealed lid, access hatch, vent, overflow and overflow warning pipe fully compliant with the UK Water Regulations, this is termed the W16-4 tank. One-piece tanks are also available in a feed and expansion grade.
A common requirement is for horizontally split tanks. Crudely these are an interim between the Sectional Tank and the One-Piece tanks. They provide the cost benefits of a self installed one-piece tanks with some of the access benefits of a Sectional Tank. Please note that site assembly of the watertight joint is the clients responsibility.
When a tank from our comprehensive standard range is not appropriate we can also provide one-piece tanks to any handle-able size requirement. These are produced within our specials production area as they are not made on our standard range of moulds.

Tank Housings and Kiosks
As a complement to the above tank ranges PFG manufacture and install a wide range of weatherproof housings. These are available as 2.2m or 2.5m high at eaves as standard. The specification can include insulation, plywood vandal proof board, ventilation grills, basic electrical packages.
The standard colours are Ivory 10C31 and Grey 00A05. In addition we can match any colour that is required.

Full Service Contracts (UK only)
At PFG we employ our own erectors and WRAS approved plumbers. The erectors are highly skilled and include slinging and lifting, confined space working, working at heights and safety harness use amongst their skills.
This coupled with our technical capability allows us to effectively manage full turnkey projects. A typical turn-key project would include:
- Installation of temporary tank
- Removal and disposal of existing tank
- Installation of new supporting structure
- Installation of new tank
- Installation of new pipework and valves
- Lagging
- Cleaning and disinfection
- Commissioning
Often when a temporary tank is impracticable the works can be accomplished over a weekend or seasonal holiday so there is no discernible disruption to the clients service.
